To hide a defect or resolve a dental problem

Consider dental veneers

chippedHave you ever wished you could simply cover up the teeth you don’t like, or change their shape, size or colour? With dental veneers you can.

Veneers can also fix teeth that are:

  • chipped, worn or broken
  • spaced too far apart
  • misshapen or irregular
  • discoloured due to a root canal, a large dental filling, too much fluoride or medications such as tetracycline

Because veneers can give the appearance of straight teeth relatively quickly, they are sometimes referred to as instant orthodontics, although it’s important to note that, for the most part, the effects of this are mainly cosmetic.

What are dental veneers?

Veneers are super-thin shells that are bonded to the front of your teeth. They can be made of composite resin or porcelain.

The advantages of composite veneers are:

  1. they tend to cost less
  2. the treatment can usually be done in just one visit

The advantage of porcelain is:

  1. better stain resistance
  2. better durability

A 3 step process

  1. The process for getting dental veneers starts with a consultation with Chestermere dentist Dr Lowry. This so that you can explain the results you are trying to achieve. It’s also to ensure you begin your treatment with your teeth, mouth and gums in good health – the scenario that will help you get the best results. Dr Lowry may also take impressions and/or x-rays of your teeth.
  2. The next step is is to prepare the tooth or teeth. In order for the veneer to fit, Dr Lowry will remove approximately ½ millimetre of dental enamel – the same thickness as the veneer.
  3. Once the tooth is prepared, the veneer is bonded in place. If you are getting porcelain veneers, this step will take place a week or two after step 2 as that’s generally how long it will take for the veneers to be fabricated in our dental lab.

Are you a candidate for veneers?

As noted earlier, dental veneers can resolve a variety of cosmetic and oral health issues. In most cases, veneers are a relatively simple and effective dental treatment.

However, if you:

  • have signs of tooth decay or periodontal disease
  • clench or grind your teeth
  • are missing too much tooth in the case of a broken tooth
  • have too little enamel for the veneer to stick to

Dr Lowry may suggest alternative treatments prior to or in place of veneers.
